Flight Curriculum:
Alberta’s Early Learning and Care Curriculum

Flight is a curriculum designed for the education system in the Canadian province of Alberta. It is centered on the development of an inclusive and diversified approach to education, based on principles of democratic citizenship, equity, environmental sustainability and culture. This pedagogical framework places children at the heart of the educational process, taking into account their needs, interests and backgrounds. The image of the child is that of a mighty learner and citizen, with high potential.
Flight is a forward-thinking curriculum that supports an inclusive education that respects cultural and social differences, with a strong focus on the overall development of children’s skills while preparing them to be active citizens and participants in society.
It emphasizes skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, communication, problem solving and developing autonomy.
In early childhood research, children’s readiness to learn is seen as a foundation for the acquisition and development of learning skills in a school context. Educators therefore promote the development of each of a child’s five dispositions to learn – Playing and Playful, Seeking, Participating, Persisting, and Caring’ – by offering daily invitations.

As well as ensuring the physical, emotional and spiritual health and safety of each child, the educator’s role is to co-learn, co-research and co-imagine possibilities with them too. Children are seen as active co-constructors of knowledge through the personal experiences they have in their reciprocal relationships with people and things in their environment.
Responsive environments – Time, Space, Materials and Participation – play a major role in the routines and transitions that take place on a daily basis. Flight proposes to adapt and be flexible as much as possible by including the children in the decision-making process and offering them choices.
Ultimately, children thrive when they are educated in caring and stable relationships, and their families also benefit from these close and warm relationships.
